Description:

This is an exceptional example of a Type II Gwyn & Campbell Civil War Carbine that was manufactured by Edward Gwyn and Abner Campbell of Hamilton, Ohio, circa 1863-1864, with a total production of only 4,000. Total production of both Types was approximately 8,200. Among the Union cavalry units issued these carbines were the 7th Tennessee, 5th and 8th Ohio, 4th and 8th Missouri, 3rd Wisconsin, 2nd and 3rd Iowa and 5th, 6th and 16th Illinois just to name a few. The breech end of the barrel is octagon and is fitted with a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 600 yards. Sling bar and ring on the left side of the receiver. The rear lock plate screw enters from the left side of the stock wrist. The hammer is flat with beveled edges and the lever is the shorter Type II pattern with the vertically mounted claw-like latch. The receiver, rear sight base, hammer and lever are casehardened, and all other metal parts are blue. The lock plate is marked "GWYN & CAMPBELL" in an arch over "PATENT/1862/HAMILTON. O." behind the hammer, small "R" at the rear of the lock and "UNION/RIFLE" is marked vertically on the front, right side of the receiver. The left barrel flat just ahead of the receiver is stamped with "PT" and there is the letter "W" on the upper left front of the receiver. The matching serial number is stamped on the bottom of the barrel, frame, lever and breechblock. Mounted with a smooth walnut stock with a casehardened carbine buttplate and two crisp boxed "WHR" and "RKW" cartouches on the left wrist. There is a small "R" stamped on the buttplate tang and "WHR" on top of the stock ahead of the buttplate tang.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel retains 90% plus original blue finish with an area of smooth grayish brown patina on the muzzle. The breechblock and upper tang retain 95% original bright niter blue finish with areas of smooth brown patina. The receiver, lock plate and lever retain 85% plus original bright case colors with some wear on the left rear from the saddle ring and some smooth gray on the contact areas of the lever. The stock is also excellent with a 1 1/4 inch long narrow pressure dent on the left heel and overall a few minor dings and handling marks, with sharp cartouches. The markings remain clear. Mechanically excellent. An exceptionally nice Type II Gwyn & Campbell Civil War carbine.
