Description:

These rifles were developed by J.P. Lindsay in 1863 with the obvious intent of increasing the fire power of the infantry soldier by having two successive shots in a single barrel. This necessitated two hammers arranged side-by-side to the rear of the bore with an enlarged firing chamber at the rear of the single barrel. There is a mechanism on the single trigger that ensures that the right hammer always fires first. Lindsay's patent actually covered the loading and firing of two charges in a single barrel. The top of the breech section of the barrel is marked "LINDSAY/PATENTED.OCT. 9.1860." There is "US" on the buttplate and two clear boxed "ADK" inspector cartouches on the stock. It is complete with a ramrod that has the tulip/cupped end. There were only about 1,000 of these Muskets manufactured in 1863 and 1864 under contract of the Army, making the Lindsay two shot Model 1863 rifle musket a very rare Civil War rifle.

Rating Definition:

Excellent as issued. The rifle retains most of the original armory bright finish with some scattered discoloration. The stock is also excellent with some scattered minor handling marks. The cartouches are crisp. Mechanically excellent.
