Description:

Model 1859 Rifle manufactured by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co., of Hartford, Connecticut, circa 1862-1863 and subsequently refurbished to new condition at the close of the Civil War. The rifle has a blue barrel, casehardened receiver and furniture with a oil finished walnut stock and forearm. The screws and small components have a fiery, niter blue finish. The right side of the barrel has a lug for a saber bayonet. The barrel has a block-mounted, nickel-silver, front sight blade and a R.S. Lawrence patent folding leaf rear sight with a 900 yard center notch. The receiver retains the complete Lawrence pellet primer. The stock has a color casehardened patchbox and buttplate. The upper receiver tang is stamped with the serial number "57773" and the underside of the barrel is serial numbered "C39394". The ribbon-shaped "DFC" final inspection mark used on metallic cartridge conversions of Sharps rifles and carbines is stamped in the center of the left side of the stock. Two horizontal and one vertical Ordnance inspection stamps with script initials and rectangular borders stamped on the left stock wrist. Single letter and multiple initial Ordnance sub-inspection marks are visible on the barrel, forearm, stock and most major components. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the three-line Sharps Hartford address ahead of the rear sight and "NEW MODEL 1863" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The rear sight base is stamped with the usual "R.S. LAWRENCE" patent markings. The two-line Sharps 1848 patent date is stamped on the left side of the receiver. The upper receiver has the two-line Lawrence patent markings below the pellet primer and the two-line Sharps 1852 patent markings are located on the lockplate.

Rating Definition:

The possible period assembled rifle is excellent condition and retains nearly 97% of the blue and casehardened finish. The barrel has nearly all of the blue finish intact and the case colors on the receiver, patchbox and buttplate are vivid. Wear is limited to some minor age discoloration on the bottom of the lever. The screws and small components have 95% or more of the fire blue finish. The stock and forearm are excellent plus with raised 'feathered' grain that shows minimal handling. The Ordnance inspection marks on the stock are in nearly perfect.
