This is an example of one of the Model 1862 Sharps & Hankins carbines purchased by the U.S. Navy between 1862 and 1865. The carbine has the unique leather barrel cover to protect the blue barrel from rust. The leather is secured by two screws at the breech. The barrel is numbered "8820" and the serial number "5813" is on the upper tang and lever bar. The left side of the frame is marked "SHARPS/PATENT/1859" and "[anchor]/US" with the right side marked "SHARPS/&/HANKINS/PHILDA". Smooth straight grip stock with sling swivel and brass buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The leather cover is supple. The metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina with the some very scattered light pitting. The leather is very dry, but mostly complete. The stock is also very good with a few minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
