Description:

Also known as the "Side Lever Hall", Simeon North manufactured approximately 10,500 of these carbines between 1844 and 1855. The top of the breechblock is marked "U.S./S. NORTH/MIDLTN/CONN./1847" and the left rear of the barrel is marked "JH". There is a small "H" on the lower tang behind the trigger guard. The carbine has the breechblock thumb lever that was finished in bright niter blue on the right side of the receiver and extended sling bar and ring on the opposite side. Fixed post and notch sights and iron cleaning rod. The breech block and hammer are casehardened and the remaining metal parts are finished with brown lacquer. Mounted with a smooth one-piece full straight grip stock, secured by two barrel bands and smooth flat iron buttplate. There is a boxed "GWH" cartouche on the left flat. The Model 1843 Hall/North Carbine was the last of the Hall carbines and rifles issued by the U.S. Army. Model 1843 Hall carbines were carried by U.S. Dragoons during the Mexican War and continued in service through most of the Civil War, being issued to many cavalry units in Illinois, Missouri and Kansas, as well as the 4th Arkansas,5th Iowa, 2nd Wisconsin, 1st Indiana and 8th and 9th New York.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The carbine retains 98% plus original brown lacquer finish with a scratch and ding on the left side of the barrel. 95% plus of the original case colors remain on the hammer and breech block with a smooth dove gray on the balance. The stock is also excellent with a small gouge in the same area as the scratch on the barrel and overall a few minor dings and handling marks. The markings are sharp, and the stock cartouche is clear. The action is excellent. An extraordinary, as issued example of a widely used cavalry carbine which saw many years of service.
