Description:

This is an excellent example of a Second Model Maynard Patent Civil War carbine that was manufactured from 1863 to 1865 by the Massachusetts Arms Co. of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. This variation was also known as the "Model 1863". These carbines were issued to Union cavalry units during the Civil War, among those regiments were the 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee. The left side of the frame is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27 1851/DEC 6 1859" and "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS" on the right side. The serial number appears on the lower tang. The barrel is fitted with a pinched blade front sight and a three leaf rear sight, with the leafs marked "1", "3" and "5". The left side of the rear sight base is marked with the letter "N" and the left side barrel flat is marked with the letter "S". The letter "N" is also on the saddle ring base and the "S" on the buttplate tang. The barrel is blue, niter blue hammer and casehardened remaining parts. There is a saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side of the frame and the carbine is mounted with a smooth oil finished walnut straight grip stock with a sharp script "AJN" and "JM" boxed cartouches on the left wrist and a small "N" on top just ahead of the buttplate tang. The stock is correctly without a patch box.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 95% original blue finish with some thinning to a smooth plum patina. The hammer retains most of the original bright niter blue finish. The frame shows 70% original darkened case colors with a smooth brown patina on the balance. The tangs have a smooth mottled brown patina. The lever and buttplate have a smooth mottled brown patina with strong original case colors in the protected areas of the lever. The stock is excellent with a few minor dings and handling marks. As noted above the cartouches are sharp. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. A very fine example of a Civil War Maynard carbine.
