The lock plate features the Second Model markings "J.H.MERRILL BALTO/PAT JULY 1858/APL.9. MAY 21-28-61" under the bolster, "Eagle/shield" marked in front of the hammer and "1863" marked behind the hammer. The breech latch is marked with the Merrill name and patent date, along with the serial number. The single barrel band, trigger guard and "U.S." marked buttplate are brass. Straight grip stock with a saddle ring bar mounted to the left side flat and correctly without a patch box. The left side flat is stamped with a boxed "RKW" cartouche, and "TKL" initials stamped on the comb and barrel at breech, with many of the components stamped with the inspection initial "L".

Rating Definition:

Very good as cleaned, with some fine scratches overall, concentrated on the barrel. The brass components have a fine patina. The stock is very fine with exception of some cracks near the buttplate and trigger and the initials "DP" cut into the buttstock (right side), along with some minor dings and scratches and some scattered minor dents. Mechanically very good.
