Description:

Manufactured for Remington under a sub-contract with Savage Revolving Arms Company, the Split Breech Carbine is the first Remington longarm to use metallic cartridges and the last contract arm supplied to the Federal government at the conclusion of the Civil War. These carbines were manufactured circa 1865-1866 with the first delivery to the U.S. five months after the conclusion of the Civil War. Almost all were resold to Remington in 1870 who then promptly sold the carbines to France. The upper tang has the two line address/patent dates marking with single letter inspector marks on most of the components. Pinched blade front and folding two leaf rear sight graduated to 500 yards. Sling bar and ring on the left side of the receiver. Stock has a weak cartouche on the wrist and the underside of the forearm and belly of the buttstock have unidentified set of stamps of foreign origin.

Rating Definition:

About good. The carbine has a smooth dark patina with some scattered extensive mild pitting. The wood is fine with some pressure dents, some wood missing around the forearm screw and a minor chip missing near the frame. Mechanically fine.
