Description:

Model 1863 Type II Rifle-Musket manufactured by the Springfield Armory in 1864. This musket was the last regulation U.S. muzzle-loading longarm; Springfield Armory manufactured over 255,000 of these rifle-muskets in 1864-1863. The musket has the distinctive combination of casehardened Model 1863 lock with revised hammer, bolster with no clean-out screw, simplified single leaf rear sight, solid, spring-fastened, barrel bands and a straight shank ramrod with tulip head. With the exception of the casehardened lock plate, hammer and blued rear sight, the musket is finished "National Armory Bright". The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The rear of the lock plate and top of the barrel are dated "1864". The Eagle and Shield motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" are roll-stamped on the lockplate ahead of the hammer. A smaller "Eagle/Shield" is stamped on the nipple bolster. The left barrel flat is stamped with the Springfield "V/P/Eagle Head" proof and inspection marks. "U.S." is stamped on the heel of the buttplate. The left stock flat is stamped with the Ordnance sub-inspection and final inspection marks which consist of the script initials "WTT" in a rectangle with rounded ends and the script initials "ESA" in an oval. The musket is complete with a turned maple barrel plug.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, as issued. The musket is bright and shows only traces of firing wear and remains in nearly new condition. The lock plate and hammer retains 95% of the original casehardened finish. The right sight has 80% of the blue finish intact. The bolster has traces of flash pitting behind the nipple but there is no evidence of flash pitting on the barrel. All of the markings on the lock, barrel and buttplate are clear. The Ordnance inspection marks on the left stock flat are nearly perfect. The stock is in excellent condition with sharp edges on the left flat, around the edges of the lock plate and on the edge of the barrel channels. The stock shows only a few, very minor, storage marks. This is a very good example of the last muzzle-loading weapon made by Springfield Armory and the last percussion rifle-musket issued to the U.S. Army.
