Description:

This is an example of a Civil War Model 1858 double-action revolver manufactured under government contract by the Starr Arms Co., of New York, New York between January 1862 and May 1863. The revolver has a six-shot cylinder, solid frame, and one piece oil-finished walnut grip. The barrel, frame, cylinder and trigger guard have a high polish blue finish. The loading lever and short spur hammer are casehardened. A blade front sight is mortised on the barrel and the rear sight is a shallow notch in the hammer lip. The right side of the frame is marked "STARR'S PATENT JAN.15, 1856" and the left side is marked "STARR ARM'S CO., NEW YORK". The matching serial number, "21191 is stamped on the front of the frame, hammer and on the cylinder. Single-letter ordnance sub-inspection mark "B" is stamped on most major components. Two script Ordnance inspection marks are stamped on the right side of the grip (upper and lower) and a single script inspection mark is stamped on the lower left side. Star Model 1858 revolvers were widely issued to Federal cavalry regiments during the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 50% plus bright original blue finish, concentrated on the cylinder and frame, with a smooth mottled gray patina on the balance. The hammer retains most of the original case colors. The grip is very fine with crisp and clear cartouches, and some scattered minor dings and dents. The frame markings remain sharp. The action is fine.
