Description:

This an extremely nice example of a breech loading Peabody carbine that was manufactured by the Providence Tool Company, Providence, Rhode Island circa 1866 to 1871. Developed and tested during the Civil War, the Peabody Carbine entered production after the end of the war. Significant quantities of this advanced carbine were subsequently purchased by many foreign countries. The receiver is marked "PEABODY'S PAT./JULY 22. 1862/MAN'F'D BY/PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROV. R.I." on the left side of the receiver. There is a small "E" stamped on the top of the receiver, rear of the lock and on the lever, "B" on top of the breech block and rear of the lower tang. "H" on the saddle ring base, "S" on the bottom of the receiver and an "R" on the buttplate tang. Blade front sight, two leaf folding rear sight graduated to 600 yards, saddle ring mounted on the left side of the receiver/stock wrist, blue barrel and casehardened remaining parts, and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a steel carbine buttplate and sharp boxed script "W.C. cartouche on the left wrist.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel retains 95% original plum blue finish. The buttplate has a smooth brown patina with flashes of the original case colors. The remaining parts retain 98% of the original case colors. The wood is also excellent with a few scattered small minor dents and handling marks. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
