These Hotchkiss Second Models can be distinguished by the safety located on the top left side of the receiver and the magazine cutoff located on the top right side of the receiver. Muskets had a 28 inch barrel. The left side of the receiver has the three line address/patent marking with the top of the receiver wall stamped with the serial number and inspector initials "HN". "HN" is stamped on other components including the bolt assembly. The breech of the barrel is stamped "W.WK./R/US/[anchor]/V/P/[eagle head]/HN". Blade front sight and "R" marked rear sight graduated to 1,200 yards with range markings 1 through 5 on the left side of the ski slope base. Smooth full length straight grip stock with two barrel bands. The rifle has a cleaning rod.

About good. The rifle has a smooth brown patina with traces of original blue finish in the protected areas and heavy amounts of original blue in the barrel bands. The refinished stock is good with a couple large pressure dents and some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
