Description:

Manufactured in 1853. The revolver has the large oval iron trigger guard, iron back strap and bordered hammer knurling. The top barrel flat is marked "-ADDRESS COL COLT. LONDON.-". "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped on the left side of the frame. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene, "COLTS PATENT NO.38278" marking and London "Crown/V" and "Crown/GP" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel lug and on the cylinder between each nipple recess. The complete matching serial number is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, loading lever and arbor pin. The wedge is mis-matched. The left side of the barrel lug ahead of the wedge is marked with a crown over "GP" and "V" proof marks and the proof marks appear on the cylinder alternating between each nipple recess. The upper right rear of the barrel is period stamped "033" and the left rear of the barrel is period stamped with the letters "PM" inside an oval. These period barrel markings may indicate that this revolver was a Navy issued to a British militia which may account for the full blue finish. Brass post front, hammer notch rear sights and fitted with a varnished one piece walnut grip. Complete in a period wooden case with inset brass shield on the lid and purple velvet lining. In the case is a lacquered James Dixon bag shaped powder flask, Colt marked iron two cavity bullet mold, Eley cap tin, partially full, an "L" shaped screwdriver/nipple wrench and several conical and round lead balls.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period refurbished with most of the dull armory style blue finish remaining. There is some minor scattered pin prick type pitting on the cylinder and barrel. The grip is good with a small chip on each toe, some wear on the lower edges and overall some scattered minor dents and dings. The front trigger guard screw is a replacement. The markings are clear. The action is fine. The case is very good with a slightly warped lid showing scattered minor scratches and dings on the exterior and some contact wear to the fine original lining, worn through from the front sight. The corner compartment wall has separated at one end. The flask is very good with an aged patina. The mold has a conical lead bullet stuck in the sprue, otherwise very fine, the screwdriver/nipple wrench is very good with most of the original bright niter blue finish remaining and the cap tin is good with the lid label completely intact.
