Description:

Manufactured from the mid-1860s to the mid-1870s these shotguns used special steel cartridges. The four shot carrier consists of a series of fins is enclosed within a large round housing with a hinged loading gate on the top. The hammer pulled the sliding breechblock to the rear, removing the fired case from the barrel, then revolving the cloverleaf carrier; when the trigger was pulled, it pushed the next cartridge into the barrel firing it. The loading gate is marked with the three line address/1866 patent date information. The serial number is stamped on the barrel and frame under the forearm and on the bolt. Smooth forearm with pewter forend cap and straight grip stock with steel shotgun buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The shotgun has a mottled brown-gray patina with the frame retaining traces of silvered out original case colors in and around the protected areas a couple areas of faded original blue on the upper tang and trigger guard. Lower tang is cracked and upper tang repaired. The revarnished wood is poor with a repaired wrist of the buttstock and some scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
