Manufactured from the mid-1860s to the mid-1870s these shotguns used special steel cartridges. The four shot carrier consists of a series of fins is enclosed within a large round housing with a hinged loading gate on the top. The hammer pulled the sliding breechblock to the rear, removing the fired case from the barrel, then revolving the cloverleaf carrier; when the trigger was pulled, it pushed the next cartridge into the barrel firing it. The loading gate is marked with the three line address/1866 patent date information. The serial number is stamped on the barrel and frame under the forearm and on the bolt.
