Description:

This is a mid-production, Series 2, Type 44 Carbine as produced at the Chigusa factory under the Nagoya Arsenal. The Type 44 Carbine was introduced in 1911 specifically for cavalry use and was used throughout WWII. The top of the receiver is marked with the Japanese Royal Chrysanthemum which is unground (but struck twice) over the Kanji markings for "44/type". The receiver is correctly marked on the left side wall with the series mark serial number 5728 and the Nagoya arsenal mark. The carbine has the late third (long type) type front barrel band/bayonet lug and is correctly fitted with an original 13 1/2 inch triangular shaped bayonet. It has the standard milled trigger guard floor plate and barrel band. It is fitted with the short staff rear sight and inverted "v" front sight with guards and has the standard stock and handguard and a flat steel buttplate with the small storage compartment.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine with 90% plus of the original wartime blue finish overall with clear sharp markings overall showing minor edge and high spot wear overall with more blue loss on the very end of the barrel that has a small area of pin-prick pitting on the end. The front barrel band/bayonet assembly show some signs of very fine rust starting that can be easily cleaned. The stock and handguard both show their original finish with numerous light handling marks and pressure dents overall from use and storage. The carbine has an all matching bolt assembly correctly numbered to the carbine. A very fine example of a highly desirable WWII Type 44 Japanese Calvary Carbine.
