Description:

Manufactured in 1862 for the civilian market, with a four screw frame cut for a shoulder stock. The top of the barrel has the one line New York address, the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT", and the cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval battle scene and marked "COLTS PATENT No 0317" over "PATENTED SEPT 10th 1850". The left side trigger guard shoulder is marked "44 CAL" and the upper left rear of the trigger guard bow is marked with the letter "C". The matching number is marked on the bottom of the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap with the number "2" above the number on the barrel and under the remaining three. The cylinder pin is numbered "0317" and the wedge is mis-matched (26888). Blade front and hammer notch rear sights, and fitted with a smooth varnished walnut grip.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 40% original bright blue finish, mainly on the barrel and protected areas of the cylinder, with a smooth brown patina on the balance. The frame has a smooth gray patina with traces of original case colors in the protected areas of the recoil shield. The trigger guard retains half of the original silver plating which is beginning to darken with age. The exposed brass has a pleasant mellow aged patina. The grip is very fine with most of the original varnish remaining and showing some minor wear and nicks on the lower edge, and overall some minor dents and handling marks. The action needs work, the cylinder does not rotate when the hammer is cocked. The cylinder scene is mostly visible and the markings are clear.
