Description:

This is an impressive large bore shotgun with the retailer marking Walther Locke & Co., a British trading company operating in India. The top of the barrel towards the breech is marked "WALTHER LOCKE & Co./CALCUTTA 4240". The barrel marking is just behind the two leaf rear sight graduated 100 yards and 120 yards respectively. The front sight is a bead. A large star burst pattern is engraved ahead of the rear sight. The lock plate has a border engraving and is marked "WALTER LOCKE & Co." The border engraving extends to the frame. British proofs are stamped on the water table and barrel flats. The number "6" is stamped on the barrel flats. Damascus chain link pattern barrel with the remaining metal surfaces being casehardened. The pistol grip stock features multi-point checkering on the forearm and grip area. The buttstock has a blank silver initial shield and is fitted with a solid unmarked recoil pad. Choke measures .055. It appears to be a 6 gauge and bore measures .945. 6 gauge shotguns are rarely encountered. Length of pull is 13 3/4 inches.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains "shadows" of the original Damascus pattern with a smooth brown-gray patina showing some minor pitting towards the muzzle. The remaining metal surfaces retain 50% original case colors. The wood is buttstock with a couple minor gouges and a number of minor pressure dents and scratches. The replacement forend tip is a separate piece of walnut that has been finished to match. Overall the checkering is crisp. Mechanically fine.
