Description:

This percussion rifle once belonged to the Royal Bavarian Gun Cabinet which is documented by the crest crown with two swords between the two hammers and was manufactured by F. Baader, a premier gunmaker in Munich, Germany. Equipped with a blade front sight and a two leaf rear sight. The over/under barrels are Damascus with the top barrel rifled and the lower barrel appearing to have been originally smooth. The top barrel has a silver inlaid fancy banner marked "F. Baader u. Sohn in Munchen" and at the rear of the barrel is a silver and gold scroll pattern inlay. A German silver tipped ebony ramrod is positioned between the barrels on the right side. A scroll engraving is featured on the lock plates, barrel tang, left hammer, trigger guard, trigger guard finial and flat buttplate. The right lock plate has "F. BAADER" inlaid in gold ahead of the hammer and the left lock plate has "IN MUNCHEN" inlaid in gold ahead of the hammer. The action screws have inlaid gold flower blossoms. Double set triggers, dog face carved walnut trigger guard extension and checkered and floral carved walnut patch box. The half stock features fancy checkering on the forearm and wrist, a cheekpiece, a floral carving on the forearm tip and a deep relief carving of a stag in a woodland scene at the rear of the buttstock on the left side.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrels retain most of the Damascus pattern with an attractive dark patina. The remaining metal surfaces have as smooth dark patina with rust present on the buttplate. The right hammer is a replacement and the cracked left hammer is missing the spur. A chunk of wood is missing from the trigger guard extension. The stock is fine with some minor pressure dents and scratches with an age crack in the buttstock carving and a hairline crack on the forearm. Overall the engraving and craving remain crisp.
