Description:

This is an example of a Navy Lt. W.W. Kimball inspected Model 1885 Rifle. The November 4, 1879 patent date is stamped on the left receiver wall and the two line Remington address/sole manufacturers and agents marking followed by the factory serial number (50,746) is stamped on the left receiver rail. The receiver ring is stamped "U.S.N./[anchor]/No. 1717/W.W.K." The rifle is correctly without a bayonet stud and has a buckhorn sight found on Navy numbered rifles from 1,001 to 2,540. An unidentified Sub-Inspector star H stamp is found on the left rear side of the receiver as observed on Navy serial number range 1,006 and 2,912 rifles. The left side of the rear sight base is marked "R L". "U" marked barrel bands and mounted on a smooth straight grip stock which has the number "253" stamped near the buttplate tang.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refurbished. The rifle retains 95% of the blue finish showing some minor thinning. There are a few areas of minor pitting under the finish. The wood is very fine with some minor pressure dents and a couple gouges. Mechanically excellent.
