Description:

This is a very fine example of a Tokyo Gas and Electric manufactured Model 1902 Nambu pistol which collectors refer to as a Papa Nambu version, that falls into the scarce 8,000 series serial number range. These were produced after the 2nd variation, Tokyo Arsenal contract that was produced in the 1923-28 time frame with serial numbers in the 8,075-8,549 range, with only 525 of this series manufactured. These have been identified as having the one-piece frame with the milled side panels. This example is in slightly better condition than most known examples, as all of the Model 1902 pistols saw extensive service as a standard issue Japanese military pistol by both the Navy and Army. As noted this pistol falls into a very unique serial number range that was a pre-cursor to the next private purchase variations. The top of the receiver has the small intertwined "TGE" mark for the Tokyo Gas and Electric Company while the right side of the upper receiver is marked with the four intertwined cannon balls symbol of the Tokyo Arsenal, followed by three Kanji markings/proofs over the serial number "8207". These pistols are equipped with adjustable tangent rear sight calibrated from 50-500 meters and a fixed inverted "v" front sight, with front grip safety. The right grip panels is also adorned with three-white painted Kanji Characters. It is complete with a correct replacement nickel plated Papa magazine numbered "4869" on the spine. The striker knob is mismatched. The leather holster is an original "Papa" that has three Kanji characters painted on the front flap with the slightly wider, clam-shell cover. The front of the holster has the original ammunition pouch that contains two rows of loops; nine and seven each, inside the pouch. Inside the clam-shell are three more partial readable Kanji markings painted in white letters. This scarce pistol and holster lot is accompanied by a very desirable original WWII box of Nambu ammunition still sealed. The top of the box has several Kanji characters which identifies the ammunition as being "1st Tokyo Arsenal ammunition, Type 14 Showa date 20.2".

Rating Definition:

Fine with 70% plus of the original blue finish remaining with the balance a dulled/oxidized brown patina finish, mostly on the grip straps and upper front edges of he upper receiver, from handling and service use. The grips are very fine plus with crisp checkering, showing wear across the tops of the checkering with the white Kanji markings still very readable and intact. This pistol has matching numbers except the striker spring guide (numbered 8287) and magazine as noted. A very nice example of an original and very scarce pre-WWII Japanese Model 1902 Nambu rig with original holster and ammunition.
