Description:

Springfield Armory manufactured approximately 15,000 Model 1903 rifles using the Hoffer-Thompson conversion system as Gallery Practice rifles between 1907 and 1918, with this rifle manufactured in 1912. These rifles used standard 1903 receivers with a special 22 caliber barrel with an enlarged chamber that used special steel chamber inserts to fire the 22LR cartridges. Additionally this rifle has had the firing pin modified to use the steel inserts. The receiver has the standard four line Springfield Armory markings over the serial number "106883". The barrel is marked "S A/flaming bomb/9-12" and it has the unmarked straight bolt handle and all-milled components. The stock is an early finger groove that has a boxed "CCV" cartouche on the left side with a circled "P" proof on the underside with a steel buttplate with an early no-clip handguard. This example does not have the copper-colored firing pin spring found on most Gallery Practice rifles.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 85% of an arsenal dipped blue finish over the original metal finish with flaking and scratching of the blue finish in various areas. The stock and handguard are both very fine with a nice dark original appearance with a clear cartouche and P proof. The front section of the handguard has been sanded/dished a long time ago and now matches the stock correctly. Mechanically fine. A scarce and desirable Model 1903 Gallery Practice rifle.
