Description:

Remington Model 1863 "Zouave" Percussion Rifle manufactured in 1863. The rifle has a blued barrel, casehardened lock, hammer, and barrel tang, brass forearm tip, barrel bands, trigger guard, patch box and buttplate. The stock is oil finished black walnut. The rifle is fitted with a straight shank iron ramrod with tulip head. The barrel has a wide base iron front sight and two position Model 1855 rear sight with a lug on the right side for the sword bayonet. The lock plate is dated "1863" behind the hammer and roll stamped with the Eagle and Shield motif above "U.S." followed by "REMINGTON'S/ILLION N.Y." in two lines in front of the hammer. The top of the barrel is dated "1863" on the center line and stamped with "V/P/EAGLE HEAD", proof and inspection marks on the left side. The left barrel flat is stamped "STEEL" followed by the Ordnance sub-inspection mark "R.K.A." Single letter Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. The left stock flat is stamped with two Ordnance inspection marks which consist of the initials "B.H." and "HDJ" in script letters with rectangular borders. "U.S." is stamped on the heel of the buttplate. The rifle is complete with the original sword bayonet and scabbard. The bayonet has a bright finished 20 inch fullered blade with cast brass grip with down-turned quillion. The grip is stamped with a "B.H." inspection mark and small "S" sub-inspection marks. The scabbard has a black leather body with brass throat, frog stud and tip. The Model 1863 Percussion Rifle was an improved version of the U.S. Model 1855 Harpers Ferry Rifle, and has the distinction of being the last percussion rifle purchased by the Ordnance Department. Many collectors consider the Model 1863 rifle to be the best looking and best made Civil War longarm.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The rifle appears to be unfired and remains in as issued condition. The barrel has 97% plus or more of the original blue finish; wear is limited to several minor storage marks. The hammer, lock plate and trigger retain 99% plus of the vivid case colors. There is no flash pitting on the bolster, percussion nipple hammer or adjacent areas of the barrel. The brass furniture is excellent. The stock is excellent and retains nearly all of the original oil finish; wear is limited to several very minor storage marks on the left side. The markings on the barrel, lock plate and other metal components are extremely sharp. The Ordnance inspection marks on the left flat are crisp. The sword bayonet is very fine and the blade retains most of the original polish; wear is limited to a one-inch patch of light pitting on the left ricasso. The scabbard is excellent. This is an excellent unfired/un-issued example of a Remington Model 1863 Percussion Rifle with sword bayonet and scabbard.
