Description:

This is an excellent example of one of the approximately 5,800 percussion revolvers manufactured circa 1863-65 by Rogers & Spencer of Willowdale, New York (which is near Utica). The U.S. Ordnance contract was for 5,000 revolvers, 1,500 to be delivered by the end of April 1865 and the balance by September of 1865. There is no record of issuance of any of the revolvers, due to the Civil War ending. The top strap is marked "ROGERS & SPENCER/UTICA NY". The matching serial number is marked on the bottom barrel flat, left side of the frame, cylinder and on the butt. There are small single letter "B" inspection mark on most of the parts, "W" on the left rear barrel flat and bottom of each grip panel and an "X" on the bottom of the frame ahead of the trigger guard. The revolver is finished blue with a casehardened hammer and loading lever assembly and bright trigger. Brass cone front, frame notch rear sights and fitted with smooth walnut grips with a sharp "RPB" cartouche on the lower left panel.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains 97% plus bright original high polish blue finish showing some scattered minor flaking, (mainly on the cylinder), some edge wear, drag line on the cylinder and some minor scratches. The hammer and loading lever assembly retain half of the original faded case colors mixed with a smooth dove gray. The grips are also excellent with a tiny chip on each toe, a few minor dings and a sharp cartouche. The markings are sharp. The action is excellent.
