Description:

Manufactured in 1853. The revolver has a four inch octagon barrel with loading lever, six-shot cylinder and brass cone shaped front sight. The barrel and cylinder have a high polish blue finish. The loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened and the brass trigger guard and back strap have a silver plated finish. The one piece grip is highly figured walnut with a high polish varnish finish. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene. The top of the barrel is presentation engraved "SAML COLT" in the Old English lettering. The revolver has highly detailed scroll engraving on the barrel, loading lever, wedge, frame, hammer, grip straps and on the frame and barrel screws. The engraving appears to be the early work of Master Engraver Gustave Young and features his trademark wolf's head motif on the sides of the hammer. In addition to the Old English Colt legend engraved on the top of the barrel, the left side of the frame has "COLTS/PATENT" engraved in two lines in a rectangle bordered by scrollwork. A punch mark that indicates factory special finish and handling is stamped next to the serial numbers on the barrel, frame and back strap. The full serial number "67771" is stamped on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. The partial serial number "7771" is stamped on the loading lever. The revolver is complete with a mahogany French-fitted case with red velvet lining. The case has scalloped brass reinforcements on the corners of the lid and brass bands on the sides. A brass plate inlaid in the lid is engraved with the initials "CA". The case contains 31 caliber lead balls, brass straight leg 1849 Pocket Model bullet mold with "COLTS/PATENT" stamped across the face of both blocks and the small letter "S" stamped on the left block (COLT ACCOUTERMENTS, by Robin Rapley, M#17, page 124), unmarked bottle shaped powder flask with brown lacquer body, gold plated brass top and fixed charger and niter blue spring, blue, L-shaped combination nipple wrench and screwdriver and loose percussion caps. The non Colt case and powder flask are contemporary to the revolver.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains nearly 90% of the bright original high polish blue finish overall. The blue finish on the barrel and cylinder shows only minor handling marks. Virtually all of the roll-engraved scene is present on the cylinder. All of the cylinder pins are intact and the percussion nipples show only light flash pitting. The frame and loading lever retain 95% plus of the original case colors. The sides and face of the hammer have some scattered and very minor flash pitting. The trigger guard and back strap retain at least 95% of the silver-plated finish. The silver finish on the trigger guard is tarnished but shows little wear. The serial numbers, engraved patent and barrel markings are extremely crisp. The flawlessly executed scrollwork engraving is deep and sharp. The grip is excellent with nearly all of the varnished piano finish; wear is limited to several very minor handling marks. The original case exterior is very good with some minor scratches and handling marks on the mahogany and some scuff marks on the brass reinforcements. The case interior is fine. The velvet lining has faded and has compression marks from contact with the revolver and accessories. The fabric edges of the compartments are torn in several places from contact with the revolver and accessories. The bullet mold is very fine and shows minimal wear. The flask is very good with most of the lacquer finish on the body, gold-plated finish on the top and charger and niter blue on the springs remaining. The screwdriver is very good. This is an exceptional example of a factory engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver with case and accessories that will compliment the finest Colt collection.
