Description:

This is an example of a Colt 1851 Navy square back trigger guard revolver that was manufactured in 1851, the second year of production. The first approximately 4,200 Model 1851 Navy revolvers, (First and Second Model), were made with the square back trigger guard. The top of the barrel is marked with the early "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW- YORK CITY-" address, the left side of the frame is marked "COLT'S/PATENT" and the cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas/Mexican naval scene as well as a restamped "COLT'S PATENT NO 3478". The complete matching serial number is marked on the loading lever, barrel, frame, trigger guard, wedge, cylinder pin, cylinder and back strap. Brass cone front and hammer slot rear sights. The barrel and cylinder were blue, silver plated trigger guard and back strap, and casehardened remaining parts. Fitted with a one-piece smooth walnut grip.

Rating Definition:

Good. The metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina with some flash pitting on the breech end of the barrel, hammer and front edges of the recoil shields. The back strap and trigger guard have an aged patina with strong aged darkened original silver on the butt and in the protected areas of the trigger guard bow. The grip is good with most of the original varnish remaining and showing a minor chip on both toes, some wear on the lower edges, and scattered minor dents and dings. The markings and cylinder scene are clear. The action is fine.
