Description:

Manufactured in 1853. One line New York barrel address, "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side of frame and navy battle scene on cylinder. The upper left front of the trigger guard is marked "H". Matching serial number on the frame, trigger guard, loading lever, cylinder and back strap, with the partial serial number "1865" on the wedge and "865" on the cylinder pin. No serial number is present on the barrel which appears never to have had one. Fitted with a smooth grip. A slot has been cut into the back strap and wood removed from the inner grip, and a securing pin added thru the grip for possibly a shoulder stock of some sort. In a mahogany case with red velvet lining and six compartments with a powder flask, several conical lead bullets and partial tin of UMC percussion caps.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period modified (see above). The barrel retains traces of original blue finish with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The remaining metal surfaces also have a smooth gray patina. The trigger guard retains most of the original age darkened silver plating. The grip straps have an aged patina with traces of original silver on the back strap. The hammer spur has been modified, it extends almost straight up and it has been coarsely checkered. Mechanically needs work, the hammer only goes to the half cock and the cylinder does not rotate when the hammer is cocked. The cylinder scene is 90% visible. The grip is fine. The escutcheon on the right side is a bit ill-fitting, otherwise the modification was well done. The markings are clear. The case is fair with some wear and a number of scratches on the exterior. There are a couple of pieces of wood absent on the front edge and the lock mechanism and key hole escutcheon are absent. The lining shows stains and some moderate-heavy wear, and some separation of the partition walls. The flask is good with a dark patina and the cap tin is also good.
