Description:

Cased pair of flintlock dueling pistols made by Tomlinson of Dublin circa 1800. The half stock pistols have octagon .57 caliber, smoothbore barrels with under ribs and single steel ramrod pipes. The barrels are Damascus finished and inlaid with a single gold band at the breech. Pistol B has a gold chased touch hole. The touch hole on pistol A lacks the gold chasing. Both pistols have the maker's name: "Tomlinson/*/DUBLIN" on a gold oval inlay on the top breech flat. Both pistols have dovetail mounted nickel silver half moon front sights with fixed rear sights mounted on the barrel tangs. The flat flush fitted lock plates have sliding bar safeties and gold lined flash pans with roller bearings. The hammers are beveled with combs that face away from the hammer screws. The hammers and barrel tangs are decorated with British shield engraving. The lock plates have "Tomlinson" engraved on a gold oval inlay below the pan. The pistols have set triggers. The engraved iron trigger guards have pineapple shaped finials and prominent finger spurs. The wedge fastened half stocks have silver forend caps, wedge escutcheons, oval thumb pieces and buttcaps. The grips have flat checkering. Pistol A has and ebony ramrod with brass tip. Pistol B has an ebony ramrod with swelled horn tip and iron ball screw at the opposite end. The mahogany case has a beveled lid and sides. The top of the lid is inlaid with a shield shaped brass plate inscribed "R.S. GREENHILL". Consignor notes state that Greenhill was associated with a Dublin, Ireland, shooting club circa 1790-1810. The case interior has seven compartments and is lined with green baize. The case contains an ebony ramrod with brass tip, bottle shaped powder flask with adjustable charger and pistol ball containers in the bottom, single cavity iron bullet mold and key.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The pistol shows light handling and firing wear and retains half of the Damascus pattern on the barrel and under rib. Traces of flash pitting is present on the breech and adjacent portions of the lock plate and hammer. The lock plate, barrel tang, and trigger guard have a silver-gray patina. The engraving on the barrel tang, hammer, lock plate, trigger guard and butt cap is sharp. The engraving on the maker's cartouches is clear. It has a repaired crack on the left side of the stock between the forearm cap and the wedge escutcheon. The pistol has a number of light handling marks, particularly on the left flat. The checkering is crisp and the stock is good overall. The ramrod is broken but could be easily be repaired. The case is very good. Wear on the case exterior is limited to a few insignificant storage marks. The case interior is very good. The green baize lining is clean and unfaded. Wear is limited to a few oil stains from contact with the pistols. The ramrod, powder flask and bullet mold are fair. This is a very good pair of cased classic configuration British dueling pistols made in the late 18th or very early 19th Century by an Irish gun maker.
