Description:

Military style half-stock flintlock rifle that closely resembles the Harpers Ferry U.S Model 1803 Flintlock rifle. The rifle has a part-round/part-octagon barrel with under rib and two iron ramrod pipes. The barrel has a large dovetail mounted brass front sight and a fixed iron rear sight mounted 14-inches from the tang. The lower ramrod tail pipe, rectangular side plate, trigger guard with finger spur, elaborate patch box and crescent buttplate are brass. The lock plate has beveled edges, a small tip at the end and integral fenced pan. The lock and hammer are decorated with simple engraving and the maker's name: "R. HYSLOP/&CO." is stamped in front of the hammer. The black walnut half-stock has an ebony forearm tip and the same style cheekpiece as the U.S. Model 1803 rifle. The rifle has a simple hickory ramrod with flared tip.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel has a deep brown patina with patches of surface oxidation. The lock plate has a silver-gray patina with clear markings, decorations, and minimal pitting. The brass furniture has an attractive aged patina. The stock is also in very good condition with an attractive dark patina and scattered minor handling marks. This is an interesting military style flintlock rifle that was probably manufactured for a militia rifle company circa 1805-1815. Note: the back side of the lock is marked "ASHMORE" and there is an old glued repair inside the lock mortise, with a minor crack extending from the front edge of the triggerguard.
