Scarce Indian War Era Springfield Armory Spencer Infantry Rifle Conversion

This conversion was performed circa 1871 when approximately 1,108 of these carbines were refurbished by Springfield Armory after the conclusion of the Civil War. This example was originally manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Co. as a Model 1865 carbine and has the standard markings on the top of the receiver. Springfield Armory replaced the original barrel with a three-groove .50 caliber barrel that was 32 1/2 inches long and a full length forearm with two barrel bands and an oval "ESA" cartouche on the left side of wrist. Blade front and folding ladder rear sights, saddle ring and bar mounted on the left wrist and iron cleaning rod with slotted and swollen serrated head.

ConditionExcellent as arsenal converted to rifle configuration, 95% of the original blue finish remains on the barrel with some freckling and brown streaking. The receiver retains 80% of the muted refinished case colors with a brown patina on the balance. The barrel bands, sling bar and buttplate have a mostly gray appearance with traces of case colors. The forearm is very good with some scattered dings and scratches. The buttstock is very fine with a 4 1/2 inch long hairline crack running along the grain from the buttplate towards the front of the comb, some scratches and some dings with a legible cartouche. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
