Description:

1) This Jefferson Guard uniform sword was carried by members of the Jefferson Guard who served as a special police force for an exposition at St. Louis, Missouri, in 1904 that commemorated the acquisition of the Louisiana Territory in 1803. 20 inch long double edged straight blade that is etched with floral motifs and is inscribed "LOUISIANA PURCHASE EXPOSITION" and "JEFFERSON/GUARD." "NUMBER/III" and the Ames address are etched on the ricassos. Brass hilt with a one piece maple grip painted black, loop quillions and cross guard with the initials "J.G." for Jefferson Guard in relief. The leather wrapped iron scabbard has brass fittings with a frog stud. 2) Manufactured by Ames from Model 1879 Navy Remington Rolling Block bayonet blades, this short sword was used by the Columbian Guard, a 2,000 member force of police, fire and guard staff used at the Chicago's World Columbian Exposition of 1893 (1893 Chicago World's Fair). 20 inch long double edge straight blade with single fuller that is marked "2063" and "W.C.G." "W.C.G." is repeated on the brass guard. Brass hilt with one piece wooden grip and loop quillons. The leather scabbard has brass fittings with a frog stud. With the sword are the following 1893 World's Fair memorabilia: Columbian Guard uniform button, 1893 Columbian Exposition silver half dollar, 1893 Columbian Exposition Oct. 9 day ticket, a July 11, 1893 letter signed by the Grand Marshall of the Exposition and General of the U.S. Army Major General Nelson A. Miles. Two contemporary 1893 World's Fair books are also included: Erik Larson's THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY and Norman Bolotin and Christine Laing's THE WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION.

Rating Definition:

1) Fine. The blade has a bright appearance with most of the strong etching remaining. The grip is missing a large chip and has some minor handling marks with much of the paint remaining. The scabbard is good with the leather showing cracking and some loss of material. The brass has an attractive patina with some dings on the scabbard tip. 2) Very fine. The blade has a bright appearance with some minor scratches and the grip has a number of minor handling marks. The scabbard is good with a tear in the leather which shows some flaking. The brass has an attractive patina. Some great pieces that would make great additions to an Americana collection!
