Description:

This is an early variation of the 1896 carbine of which only 1,378 were manufactured. The left side of the receiver has the Model 1895 U.S. markings. Equipped with a ladder rear sight graduated to 1,800 yards. The stock has a "JSA/1897" cartouche on the left side near the saddle ring and two circled scripts "P"s stamped behind the trigger guard. The buttplate has a compartment. According to the included Springfield Research Service letter, this carbine was sold by Raritan Arsenal, Metuchen, New Jersey, between July 1st-15th, 1922.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel has a smooth brown patina and the remaining metal surfaces have a smooth gray patina with traces of silvered out original case colors on the in the protected areas of the receiver. Some pin point pitting is present on the action and minor pitting is present on the barrel band. The stock is also good with a lightly visible cartouche and a noticeable chip of wood missing from the forearm (left side), a few hairline cracks and some minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
