Description:

The Model 1907 was a U.S. Military contract pistol, only 205 of these pistols were manufactured, 200 to the military, 5 for presentation and perhaps a few more for civilian use. The Model 1907 appears very similar to the Model 1905 with the addition of a grip safety and a fixed lanyard loop at the bottom of the frame. The 1907 was altered from its original form in 1909 due to difficulties in the field such as jamming and other functional inconveniences. The alterations included a change in the design of the hammer, the addition of a spur to the grip safety and the enlarging of the ejection port. This Model 1907 has been altered from the usual alterations in that the front portion of the slide has been re-enforced so that it could fire more powerful cartridges. The only markings present are the serial number on the left side of the frame and the "K.M." inspection marking of Major Kenneth Morton on the left upper front of the trigger guard bow. The pistol is fitted with replacement, crudely checkered horn grips with replacement screws. The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial number, 45 caliber, 5" barrel, blue finish with grips as "Not Listed" and that it was shipped as 1 of 200 to The U.S. Government, Commanding Officer, Springfield Armory, Springfield Mass. On March 17, 1908. The remarks note the modified hammer, vertical ingestion, auto indicator that shows when loaded, straightened stirrup, longer trigger stirrup pin and the "KM" initials for Major Kenneth Morton, Colt's inspector for the Model 1905 pistol 1907 to 1908.

Rating Definition:

Fair. Despite its condition the pistol has historic significance in that it was possibly the only pistol of its kind to be used in the testing of high powered ammunition. This pistol was obviously tested to the extreme. The complete barrel assembly is absent and the lower part of the slide below the ejection port is broken at the rear and rolled forward. The pistol does retain strong original blue finish on the sides of the frame and slide mixed with brown and gray patina. The magazine is absent and as mentioned above the complete barrel assemble is also absent. The grips are good with a few minor chips and the checkering is crisp. The hammer, trigger, and grip safety still function properly.
