Colt Model 1849 Pocket Model revolver manufactured in 1853. This revolver is the rare Model 1849 Pocket Model variation with three inch barrel, short (Model 1848 Baby Dragoon style) frame and barrel without breech extension. Known to collectors as the "Wells Fargo" variation, this distinctive Model 1849 Pocket revolver is found in the 55,000-57,000 serial number range. Total production of Model 1849 "Wells Fargo" revolvers is estimated at approximately 4,000 pistols. Despite the collector designation, the Colt Model 1849 "Wells Fargo" revolvers had no connection with the famous stagecoach company. In addition to the 3 inch barrel, short frame and barrel extension, the revolver has a five-shot cylinder, brass cone front sight, border-less knurling on the hammer spur and small oval trigger guard. The barrel is roll-stamped "{ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW-YORK CITY}" in two lines. "COLTS/PATENT is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Hold-Up scene and "COLTS PATENT". The full serial number, "57773" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap and the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver has a blue barrel and cylinder, casehardened frame and hammer, and brass silver-plated trigger guard and back strap. The one-piece walnut stock has a varnished "piano" finish.

Extremely fine. The revolver is all original and retains 60% color casehardened and silver plated finish. The barrel has 40% blue with the balance a blue-gray patina with faded blue finish in protected areas and some age discoloration on the sides. The cylinder is a silver-gray with some age spotting. Nearly all of the cylinder scene remains visible. The cylinder safety pins are battered but intact. The percussion nipples have light-moderate flash pitting. The case colors on the frame and hammer have faded but remain at least 60% intact. Most of the silver plated finish is present on the trigger guard and back strap. The walnut grip is in very fine condition and shows only light handling wear. At least 85% of the piano finish varnish is present on the grip. The action is tight and the revolver appears to be in good mechanical condition. This is a fine example of a rare and early Colt Model 1849 "Wells Fargo" Pocket Model revolver.
