Description:

Manufactured in 1851 this is an example of a Colt Second Model Dragoon revolver. Colt manufactured 2,700 Second Model Dragoon Revolvers in 1850-1851. A large percentage of these revolvers were manufactured for the Army. Commercial production Second Model Dragoon Revolvers are scarce. The Second Model Dragoon revolver features on this example is the combination of square-back trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stops. The part octagon barrel is fitted with a nickel silver blade front sight with the top of the barrel stamped "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY-". The left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT". The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Ranger and Indian fight scene and "MODEL U.S.M.R./COLT'S PATENT". This commercial revolver has silver plating on the brass trigger guard and back strap and a varnished one-piece walnut grip. The barrel and cylinder originally had a blue finish and the loading lever, frame and hammer were color casehardened. The matching serial number is stamped in small numerals on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, loading lever, cylinder pin, cylinder and back strap. The wedge is un-numbered.

Rating Definition:

Good. The revolver is mostly a mottled silver-gray overall. Traces of silver plating are visible on the back strap and trigger guard. Light flash pitting is present on the muzzle, edges of the cylinder, barrel lug and breech and rear face of the cylinder. The cylinder pins are battered. The cylinder scene is light but legible. The grip is good with scattered light handling marks on the sides with most of the original varnish finish remaining. The bottom of the grip and back strap have numerous small dents. The loading lever is renumbered to match the gun and the screw is a modern replacement. The cylinder does not lock properly when action is cycled. This is a solid example of a scarce Colt Second Model Dragoon Revolver.
