Description:

This Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver was manufactured in 1867. The revolver has a blue barrel and casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer with silver plated brass trigger guard and back strap. The left side of the ivory grip features a relief carved bust of a dragoon officer wearing a helmet with an eagle crest and a United States shield. The revolver has a brass pin front sight, six-shot cylinder roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup motif and hammer with knurled bordered spur. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the late, fourth pattern legend "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in one line. "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame and "31 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The full serial number "294018" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number "4018". All of the visible serial numbers match. The London mahogany case has a scalloped brass plate on the lid. The case interior has five compartments and is lined with blue velvet. A paper label entitled "DIRECTIONS FOR LOADING COLT'S PISTOLS" is affixed to the inside of the lid. The case is complete with: (1) steel cleaning rod with blued handle, (2) high polish blue combination L-shaped screw-driver and nipple wrench, (3) iron, double cavity, "COLTS/PATENT" bullet mold, (4) British style, bag-shaped, powder flask marked: "JAMES DIXON/&SONS/SHEFFIELD" on the lid, (5) spare leaf spring, two percussion nipples and two paper cartridges and (6) reproduction 250-cap tin of Eley percussion caps.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 60% of the original blue finish. Considerable high polish blue finish remains on the top and sides of the barrel. The sides of the lug have scratches and dents and shows considerable finish loss. The cylinder has about 80% of the Stagecoach scene intact and retains about 30% of the blued finish. The rear face of the cylinder, nipples, hammer well and hammer have moderate-heavy flash pitting. The loading lever and frame retain close to 50% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. Traces of silver plating are visible on protected areas of the trigger guard and back strap; the exposed brass has a mellow, un-polished, patina. The ivory grip is in very good condition and the detailed, relief-carved Dragoon is sharp. The grips are probably not original to this revolver and there are gaps at the junction of the grips and the back strap and frame. The London case is in very good condition. The exterior shows moderate handling wear but minimal; dents and scratches. The lock escutcheon is missing. The interior is in good overall condition; the lining has some minor stains and compression marks and is torn from contact with a front sight pin. The Colt label is in fine overall condition with a few tears, compression marks and stains. The Dixon flask is in excellent condition and retains nearly all of the brown lacquer finish on the body and 95% or more of the plated finish on the top and charger. The bullet mold is in fair condition with considerable surface rust and the cleaning rod and screw-driver are in good overall condition. This is a good looking example of a late production Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver with relief carved-ivory grip and London case and accessories. The revolver appears to be in good mechanical condition.
