This Colt Cavalry Model Single Action revolver was manufactured in 1880 and sub-inspected by David F. Clark (D.F.C.) The revolver has the Colt military blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame, loading gate and hammer are color case-hardened. The one-piece walnut grip is oil finished. The ejector rod has the first style 'bulls-eye' head utilized until about serial number 113,000. The cavalry style hammer has bordered, elongated, knurling on the spur. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the fourth style, 'Elongated Block' address. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the 'Three-Date/Three-Line' Colt patent marking s followed by the "U.S." property mark. The assembly number, "725" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. The "D.F.C." sub-inspection mark is stamped on the: (1) underside of the barrel, (2) bottom of the frame above the serial number, (3) side of the cylinder and (4) left grip heel. "P" proof marks are stamped on the underside of the barrel and the side of the cylinder. The full serial number, "60848" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "0848" is stamped on the barrel beneath the ejector housing and on the side of the cylinder. "0848" is written in pencil on the inside of the grip beneath the back strap. All of the visible serial numbers match. The lower right side of the grip is stamped with a sub-inspection mark that consists of the script initials "DFC" in a rectangle. The date and final inspection mark stamped on the lower left side of the grip are not visible. Most of the Cavalry Model Single Action revolvers were modified to 'Artillery' configuration and refurbished by Colt or Springfield Armory between 1895 and 1903. U.S. contract Single Action revolvers in the original 'Cavalry' configuration are scarce.

Very fine. The revolver retains 60% of the original blue and color case-hardened finish. There is some shallow pitting on the right side of the barrel at the muzzle and cold blue has been applied over the pitting. Most of the wear on the military blue finish is concentrated on the grip straps and cylinder. The frame, hammer and loading gate have strong case colors with minor fading on the top strap and recoil shield. The Colt markings, serial numbers and military proof and inspection marks are sharp. The grip is in very good overall condition with light-moderate handling wear. The "D.F.C." sub-inspection mark on the right side of the grip is clear and the smaller sub-inspection mark on the left heel is crisp. The action is tight and functions perfectly. This is a very good example of an unaltered, "D.F.C." sub-inspected, Indian War, Cavalry Model Single Action revolver.
