Description:

This is an example of a Colt Model 1873 Cavalry revolver that was manufactured in 1890 and inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector Rienaldo A. Carr. The revolver has a military blue barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap, casehardened frame, hammer and loading gate and oil-finished walnut grips. The ejector rod has the oval head adopted in 1885. The top of the barrel is marked with the elongated block address: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". The left side of the frame is stamped with the Colt three line, three patent dates followed by "U.S.". The full serial number "132853" is located on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. A "K" is stamped below the serial number on the trigger guard and back strap. The barrel and cylinder are stamped with the partial serial number "2853". A "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the barrel and on the side of the cylinder. The "R.A.C." sub-inspector initials are stamped on the underside of the barrel, above the frame serial number and on the cylinder. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "1045". A Colt "O" inspection mark is stamped in the hammer well. The date "1890" and the boxed script "SEB" initials of Ordnance Inspector Captain Stanhope E. Blunt are visible on the lower left side of the grip. The accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber and finish with the barrel length and grips as "Not Listed", and that it was 1 of 150 delivered to the United States Government Inspector at the Colt factory on June 16, 1890.

Rating Definition:

Near fine. The revolver retains 40% of the original blue finish on the barrel and ejector housing with traces of blue in protected areas of the trigger guard and cylinder. Small amounts of the original casehardened finish are visible on the frame and hammer. The balance of the revolver has a smooth plum brown age patina. There are some file marks on the bottom of trigger guard that appear to be an attempt to remove a ding or dent (The numbers remain original). All of the markings are sharp. The grip is good with moderate wear and faint inspection marks. The edges of the grip heel are slightly rounded from handling and there are two deep scratches in the left side. The action is tight and functions correctly. A solid example of one of a U.S. Colt Model 1873 Cavalry revolver.
