Included is a Colt factory letter dated May 24, 1972 to consignor (Richard Atkinson) which confirms configuration. Colt Cavalry Model Single Action revolver manufactured in 1890 and sub-inspected by Rinaldo A, Carr (R.A.C.). The revolver has the Colt military blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame, loading gate and hammer are color casehardened. The one-piece walnut grip is oil finished. The ejector rod has the oval head introduced about serial number 113,000 and the hammer has bordered elongated knurling on the spur. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the fourth style elongated block legend "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". The left side of the frame is roll stamped with the Colt three-date/three-line patent marking is followed by the "U.S." property mark. The assembly number "900" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. The "R.A.C." sub-inspection mark is stamped on the underside of the barrel, bottom of the frame above the serial number, side of the cylinder and left grip heel. "P" proofmarks are stamped on the underside of the barrel and on the side of the cylinder. The full serial number "132528" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "2528" is stamped on the barrel beneath the ejector housing and on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The lower left side of the grip is stamped with the date "1890" above the script initials "SEB" in a rectangle (Captain Stanhope E. Blunt). The right side of the grip is stamped with a sub-inspection mark that consists of the script initials "RAC" in a rectangle. Most of the Cavalry Model Single Action revolvers were modified to Artillery configuration and refurbished by Colt or Springfield Armory between 1895 and 1903. U.S. contract Single Action revolvers in the original Cavalry configuration are scarce. Provenance: Richard R. Atkinson Collection.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. 95% of the military blue finish is present on the barrel, ejector housing and cylinder. The barrel has all of the feathered polishing marks on either side of the front sight and above the ejector housing stud. The blue finish on the grip strap and back strap is thin but 90% intact. The frame, hammer and loading gate retain close to 85% of the vivid case colors. The trigger and frame screws have 90% or more of the fire blue finish. All of the Colt markings and Ordnance sub-inspection marks are crisp. The oil finished walnut grip is very fine; wear is limited to a few very minor handling marks. The date and final inspection mark on the left side of the grip show handling wear but remain fully legible. The "R.A.C." sub-inspection mark on the right side of the grip is sharp. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. This is an exceptional example of an excellent "R.A.C." sub-inspected Cavalry Model Single Action revolver in excellent condition. It would be hard to improve upon the condition of this outstanding revolver.
