Description:

Manufactured from 1871 to 1888, with total production estimated at less than 15,000. The Rider pistol was a Joseph Rider invention that is one of the most unusual 19th Century pocket pistols and one of the first handguns to feature a tube magazine. The pistol has a blade front sight with the rear sight being a hole in the cocking lever. The magazine loads from the muzzle end. The top barrel rib has the standard two line address and patent markings which reads "E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y./RIDERS PAT. AUG. 15, 1871". The frame has the standard scroll and punch dot engraving with a geometric engraving covering the barrel. All nickel finish and fitted with smooth two-piece pearl grips. The back of both grip panels have a period hand written inscription in pencil. The left panel reads, "Laura Carpenter/-Lockwood-/1883-/Dec 4-1889" and the right panel reads, "White Plains/NY/Earnst by/Cleandia/1-1902". Provenance: Gil Hebard Collection.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The pistol retains 98% plus original nickel finish showing some light flaking at the muzzle. The engraving is crisp. The grips are excellent with a very attractive color. Mechanically excellent.
