Description:

Measuring 15 inches in overall length, the 10 inch blade is marked "W. ROS(illeg)/PHILA" on the left side, with a slight forward drop to the leading edge and a 3 1/2 inch false edge. The hilt is of brass panel construction, with an oval guard and checkered hardwood grip panels with brass rivets. With a brass fitted brown leather sheath. Research shows a W. Rose operating as a blacksmith and cutler in Blockley Township, which was integrated into Philadelphia circa 1854. The firm relocated to Sharon Hill in 1884, suggesting it was made between those dates. W. Rose still operates today chiefly as a producer of masonry trowels under the Kraft Tool umbrella.

Rating Definition:

Good. The blade shows wear and handling appropriate to age and use, with mild sharpening marks, scattered pitting, and four dings on the cutting edge. Though no provenance is provided with the weapon, these dings are possibly blade-to-blade contact. The hilt is good, showing a mixed aged patina overall, with mild dents, and the grip panels show strong varnish. Sheath is good, with mild wear.
