Description:

Measuring 10 1/2 inches in overall length, this knife is fitted with a 5 3/4 inch double edged single fuller blade, with the fullers running clear to the tip, "J. BEATTIE & SON/205 REGENT St" on the obverse ricasso, and an unidentified symbol on the reverse. Primarily firearm makers, J. Beattie and Son operated under that name circa 1865-1875. Solid metal oval guard, with a full tang, checkered horn grip panels with nickel silver rivets and "F. METAXA. R.N." on a nickel silver plate on the obverse. With a brown leather sheath. Notes provided by the consignor identify F. Metaxa as Frederick Cosmeto Metaxa; born in 1847, Metaxa was the 8th Count Metaxa-Anzolato, a hereditary title received by his ancestor Anzola Metaxa for raising a private army to assist in a Venetian-Ottoman conflict in what is now Greece, entering the Royal Navy at the age of 13. By the time of his retirement in 1901, he had served as Captain of several vessels, aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, and held the rank of Rear Admiral. In 1905, he was promoted again to Vice Admiral in Retirement, and died in 1910.

Rating Definition:

Good overall. The blade shows mild pitting and a mixed gray patina, with a few light chips along the edge. A similar dark color is present on the guard, and the otherwise very good grips show a few small wormholes. The sheath is good, with the belt loop detached and a few scuffs and cracks.
