Excellent Cased Pair of H. Tatham London Large Bore Rifled Double Barrel Percussion Howdah Pistols

A) H. Tatham Double Barrel Percussion Pistol

This is a rare set of fine Henry Tatham of London large bore double barrel percussion pistols, circa 1845. Henry Tatham Jr. (c. 1824-60) was the younger son of Henry Tatham (c. 1801-14). He began trading on his own from 24 Pall Mall in 1825 and later moved to 37 Charing Cross by 1834. Tatham was one of London's best gunmakers and was a gunmaker to the Royal family. The barrels are rifled and feature a brown twist pattern. The solid barrel rib has a single bead front sight and is marked "H. TATHAM. 37. CHARING CROSS. LONDON". A blue finished swivel iron ramrod is mounted on the underside of the barrels. The lock plates are marked "H. TATHAM" ahead of the hammers. A fine floral scroll engraving is featured on the hammers, lock plates, trigger guard and barrel tang. The hammers have a fish design. The trigger guard has a pineapple finial with high polished blue finish. The buttcap, barrel tang, hammers and lock plate have a casehardened finish. The nicely figured full length varnished stock has a single barrel wedge with German silver escutcheons, monogrammed German silver thumb oval and fine checkering on the grip area. The buttcap has a cap compartment, which also features the scroll engraving. The partitioned case is lined in royal blue velvet and has brass hardware including the blank initial plaque on top of the lid. The inside of the lid has a Henry Tatham paper trade label. The case holds the two pistols and accessories. The accessories are the following: case key, unmarked powder flask, oiler, percussion cap tin and ramrod.

ConditionExcellent. The barrels retain 95% original brown twist finish. The trigger guard retains 90% plus original high polish peacock blue finish showing some thinning to a gray. The remaining metal surfaces retain 95% original case colors. The stock is also excellent with a few minor handling marks and retaining most of the varnish. Overall the checkering is crisp. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine showing some minor handling/storage markings with a couple loose partitions. The lining shows the expected high spot wear. Most of the label is intact with clear printing. A very attractive set of high quality large bore rifled double barrel percussion pistols by one of London's finest and most famous makers.
