The lock plate is dated 1859 at the rear and has the "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" marking at the front with the eagle motif on the lid of the Maynard tape primer compartment. The barrel, like the lock plate, is dated 1859 and has the "V/P/eagle head" proofs on the left rear. Blade front sight and three leaf rear sight marked "1", "3" and "5". The full length stock has three barrel bands marked with the letter "U", the numbers "13" and "31" stamped on the right side of the buttstock and "US" marked buttplate. A trumpet head iron ramrod is included with the pre-Civil War long gun.

Rating Definition:

Good as modified with shortened barrel. The rifle has a bright mottled patina with some minor pitting (mostly on the barrel). The stock is very good with a series of scratches behind the barrel tang, chipping along the ramrod channel and a number of minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically fine.
