Description:

This extraordinary presentation Luftwaffe Officer's sword was presented to Hauptmann V. Branschweig by the sergeants and enlisted men of Flak Group Breslaf on 7 July, 1944. The sword has a 30-inch bright blade with spear point and single unstopped fuller. The obverse of the blade has a blue-gray panel etched with a Rampant Lion and Three Star crest near the hilt followed by floral decorations and the gold etched presentation: "Threm hochqerehrten Kommandeur -hptm. V. Braunschweig/Offz. Korps u. Unterstab der flakuntergruppe Breslau/7, Juli 1944". The reverse of the blade has a blue gray acid etched panel that depicts aircraft in flight above a battlefield with a gold etched sun on the horizon. The Solingen Metallwaren-Fabrik (SMF) proofmark and Luftwaffe acceptance mark are stamped on the reverse ricasso. The sword has the regulation Luftwaffe pattern hilt. The circular aluminum pommel has a brass pinwheel swastika on either side and oak leaves engraved on the edge. The grip has a blue pebble grain leather cover with double wrapped twisted silver wire. The hilt has a down turned wing shaped guard with a pinwheel brass swastika in the center. The regulation pattern scabbard has a blue pebble grain leather body with aluminum tip and throat and two suspension rings.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The blade inscription and acid-etched panels are in perfect condition and the balance of the blade shows only traces of handling wear. This is a rarely encountered presentation Luftwaffe Officer's sword with double-etched blade in nearly new condition.
