Description:

The 1865 dated lock plate has the standard U.S./Springfield markings and the breechblock is marked "1870/eagle head/cross arrows/US". Matching numbers on barrel and receiver. The ladder rear sight is graduated 2-9. Correct without provisions for sling swivels. The full stock has a cartouche on the left flat, two "U" marked barrel bands and a buttplate marked "A18" with "US" on the tang. With the rifle is a "US" marked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The rifle has an attractive bright appearance with a few areas of minor pitting. Some tool marks are present on the barrel near the muzzle. The stock is fine with "AL" marked on the buttstock, some chipping along the ramrod channel and some minor pressure dents and scratches. The "ESA" cartouche is clearly legible. Mechanically fine.
