Description:

Manufactured originally as an 1863 rifle-musket, and converted by Springfield Armory in 1865 into a breech loading rifle. Invented by Easkine S. Allin, master armorer. The "Trapdoor" is equipped with a shell ejector. The lock is dated "1865" behind the hammer and marked with the eagle/shield and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. Fixed blade front and 2-leaf folding rear sights. Mounted with a smooth straight grip stock with 3 barrel bands, sling swivels, two inspector cartouches on the left flat, "80/8" and "NO.9" stamped on the buttstock and "US" marked buttplate tang.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The musket has a bright appearance with the breechblock and hammer retaining 95% of the blue finish. Some minor pitting is present. The stock is also very good with some minor pressure dents (mostly on the buttstock) and a couple shallow gouges. The cartouches are legible. Mechanically excellent.
