Description:

Initially setting up shop at Greenside Place, Daniel Fraser later went into business with his brother John to form D. & J. Fraser and moved the business to Leith Street Terrace. Around 1889 Daniel and John dissolved their business with each continuing to trade as separate Edinburgh gunmakers. Daniel Fraser established Daniel Fraser & Company which continued to operate into the 1930s. The rifle is equipped with a blade front sight with a ramp integral to the solid rib and provisions for a hood and three leaf rear sight (two folding, one fixed) on a solid matte rib marked "DANL FRASER & CO./GUN & RIFLE MANUFACTURERS/4 LEITH ST TERRACE EDINBURGH". In takedown configuration with the action lever on the right side of the frame. The receiver features a border engraving and an extensive engraved scroll pattern with the top of the receiver marked "FRASER'S PATENT/No. 267". Crown letter proofs are present. The engraved scrollwork is also featured on the trigger and trigger guard with the serial number on the trigger guard surrounded by the quality scroll engraving. Engraved automatic tang safety with "SAFETY" in gold. The action lever is also engraved and the breechblock and receiver casehardened with the remaining metal surfaces blue. The nicely figured forearm and pistol grip stock feature multi-point checkering, engraved forearm hardware, horn grip cap, blank initial shield and checkered horn buttplate. The leather covered oak takedown case features two Fraser & Company labels on the inside of the lid (one paper secured by tacks and one leather), brass hardware, partitions for the barrel, stocked receiver, oiler (included) and other accessories and is lined in red felt. The latch is marked "SECURE/HANDMADE/LEVER". With the rifle are the following accessories: cleaning rod with wire bore brush attachment, screwdriver, box of Fraser & Co. 400/360 cartridges (10/10), tool (handle only) and oiler.

Rating Definition:

Fine as period refinished. The barrel retains 97% refinished blue finish with loss and thinning at the muzzle. Strong traces of original blue remain on the trigger plate and trigger guard. The receiver shows traces of faded original case colors while some strong, vivid original case colors remain on the breech block. The wood is excellent with a few minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. The forearm is undersized on the underside at the frame. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with minor handling/storage marks and some high spot wear on the lining.
