Description:

Winchester Model 1873 Carbine manufactured c. 1899. The carbine has the Third Model receiver with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The barrel has a block-mounted front sight located behind the upper barrel band and a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for rear sight. A staple-mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The buttplate has a sling brass trap door. The barrel, barrel bands, receiver and dust cover are blued. The hammer, loading lever and butt plate are color case-hardened. The straight grain, American walnut stock and forearm have an oil finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER"S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. "44 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "44 CAL" is stamped in script on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The upper tang is roll-stamped "{ MODEL 1873}" in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. The serial number, "535491B" is stamped in script numerals between the lever latch and the rear tang screw.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The carbine is all original and retains nearly 90% of the blue and case-hardened finish. Nearly all of the blue finish is present of the barrel and magazine. Three are several small spots of shallow pitting on the left side of the barrel in front of the forearm. The sides of the barrel bands have some minor finish wear. The receiver, dust cover and loading gate have nearly 90% of the blue finish intact. Finish loss is limited to some edge wear on the high points of the receiver and side plates and some scuff marks from contact with the saddle ring. The hammer, lever and buttplate retain nearly all of the muted case colors. The barrel and receiver markings are sharp. The forearm is in excellent condition and retains nearly all of the oil finish with a few minor storage marks. The stock is in very good condition and shows minimal handling wear. The left side of the stock and the comb have nearly all of the oil finish. Some of the oil finish has flaked on the right side of the stock and there is some spotting and finish loss on the stock wrist. Aside from this minor wear, the carbine appears to be in nearly new condition. Model 1873 Carbines were typically working guns that saw hard use; 19th Century examples like this carbine that show very little wear are extremely hard to find.
