Description:

This Winchester Model 1894 deluxe extra-Light Takedown 30 W.C.F. rifle with matching 38-55 W.C.F. extra light barrel was manufactured in 1905. The rifle is accompanied by a letter from the Cody Firearms Museum that describes the rifle as "30 caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, fancy checkered forearm, extra light, Lyman front sight for smokeless, Lyman front and rear, takedown Interchangeable barrel, extra light, fancy checkered, shotgun butt, Lyman front and rear sights, 38/55, octagon barrel" and states that it was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on January 7, 1905. The rifle has a blue barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver and smooth shotgun buttplate with casehardened hammer, trigger and lever. The straight grip stock and both forends are highly figured, fancy grain walnut with a high polish piano finish and Style H checkering. The .38-55 barrel has the same high-polish blue finish as the .30 W.C.F. barrel. Both barrel sets have full octagon rapid taper lightweight barrels with extra high, Lyman "Jack Sights" with ivory beads. The .30 W.C.F. barrel has a special order three-leaf Winchester Express rear sight; each leaf has a platinum sight line and is marked with 50, 100 or 200 yard designations. The .38-55 W.C.F. barrel has a sporting style rear sight with sliding insert. A special order Lyman folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The .30 W.C.F. barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21. 1894" ahead of the rear sight. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" in two lines below the rear sight and the caliber "30 W.C.F." is stamped on the top of the barrel. The extra .38-55 barrel has the same two-line legend as the .30 W.C.F. barrel ahead of the rear sight and is stamped with the caliber designation "38-55" between the rear sight and the receiver. The serial number "246473" is stamped across the front edge of the receiver bottom. The model designation on the upper tang is covered by the rear sight. Model 1894 deluxe extra-light takedown rifles with straight stocks are scarce. Deluxe rifles with special order spare barrel sets like this example are rare. Consigner notes indicate this rifle is one of only 119 Model 1894 rifles in this configuration.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The rifle is all original and shows very little wear. The rifle retains at least 95% of the bright original blue finish. The .30 W.C.F. barrel has at least 98% of the blue finish intact with some very minor thinning on the takedown collar. The blue finish on the receiver has handling wear on the lower edge next to the takedown collar and on contact points on the upper edges. There are some light scuff marks above the loading gate. The buttplate retains nearly all of the blue finish. The loading gate has 95% or more of the niter blue finish intact. The hammer, trigger and lever retain 98% or more of the vivid case colors. The stock and .30 W.C.F. forearm are outstanding. Nearly all of the high polish piano finish is intact, the checkered panels are extremely sharp and wear is limited to a few very insignificant handling marks. The .38-55 barrel is outstanding and retains at least 98% of the original blue finish. The forearm is excellent plus and shows minimal wear. The rifle is in perfect mechanical condition. This is an outstanding example of a rare Winchester Model 1894 deluxe extra-light, takedown rifle in caliber .30 W.C.F. with special order matching .38-55 extra-light barrel set. It would be hard to improve on this outstanding rifle.
