Description:

Colt Texas Paterson (No, 5. Paterson) revolver with 5 3/4 inch octagon barrel. The revolver barrel has no provision for a loading lever. The barrel has the distinctive eleven groove rifling and a German silver front sight blade. The square shoulder five-shot cylinder is roll-stamped with the Stage Coach Holdup scene. The recoil shield lacks the capping cut-out found on revolvers that were fitted with loading levers. The hammer spur is not knurled. The two-piece walnut grips have the distinctive flared butt. The top barrel flat is roll stamped with the legend "Patent Arms M'g. Co. Paterson, N.J.-COLT'S Pt." with the snake and star motif at either end. The serial number "37" is stamped on the inside of the barrel lug below the cylinder pin hole, on the cylinder turning ring and on the rear face of the cylinder. The replacement mismatched wedge is numbered "473". Colt manufactured approximately 1,000 Texas Paterson revolvers from 1838-1840. The large heavy caliber Holster Model Paterson was the most practical of the Paterson revolvers. Use of No. 5 Holster Model revolvers by Texas Rangers Jack Hayes and Samuel Walker created the association between Colt revolvers and the western frontier and established Colt revolvers as an effective handgun. A Texas Paterson revolver is one of the hardest to find and most desirable of all Colt revolvers and is a premier piece in any advanced Colt collection.

Rating Definition:

Good as period modified (shortened barrel). Small amounts of blue finish are visible on the protected areas of the frame. The barrel legend is sharp and most of the Stagecoach Holdup scene is present on the cylinder. The shortened barrel, cylinder and frame have a dark untouched patina. The barrel and frame have some surface rust and texture with a few minor handling marks and scratches but are free from serious pitting. The most significant handling wear is concentrated on the underside of the frame, grip strap and butt. The undersize reoiled walnut grips are fair-good with some shrinkage and a small chip on the left side of the grip at the frame cut-out and some shrinking on the opposite side of the grip. This is a solid example of the most desirable Colt Paterson revolver. The revolver shows expected wear but remains in good condition for a highly desirable Colt Texas Paterson revolver.
